![]() The Marilyn in these pages is a revelation: a gifted, intelligent, vulnerable woman who was far more complex than the unwitting sex siren she portrayed on screen. In this intimate account of a very public life, she tells of her first (non-consensual) sexual experience, her romance with the Yankee Clipper, and her prescient vision of herself as “the kind of girl they found dead in the hall bedroom with an empty bottle of sleeping pills in her hand.” Written at the height of her fame but not published until over a decade after her death, this autobiography of actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) poignantly recounts her childhood as an unwanted orphan, her early adolescence, her rise in the film industry from bit player to celebrity, and her marriage to Joe DiMaggio. ![]() By Marilyn Monroe (Author), Ben Hecht (Contributor) ![]()

When he and his group of hardened men come across a farm where they can find a meal, they also encounter a girl orphaned by the Plague. Tomas, a disgraced knight, is one of these men. Determined to keep her son’s true identity a secret, Elizabeth will need to remain one step ahead of her fragile heart, her uncertain future, and the relentless fiend bent on her new family’s ruin. Meanwhile she must convince everyone that her marriage is a genuine love match if her new husband has any hope of uncovering the enemy. There she is met by Torrington’s beautiful grown daughters, a vicious murder, and an urgent hunt for the missing intelligence that could turn the war with France. Stranded on the road with an unconscious young woman, he is forced to propose marriage to protect his identity and her reputation, as well as his dangerous mission. When the widowed Lord Torrington agreed to spy for the crown, he never planned to impersonate a highwayman, let alone rob the wrong carriage. She is not, however, prepared to protect her life. In this new Regency romance, a young unwed mother must protect her heart from the charms of her convenient new husband, Lord Torrington. ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact the book opens with what seems a fairy tale tone,“There once was a girl named Phoebe Snow,” the pristinely appealing character in the railroad’s ad campaign. ![]() Those who cynically refer to “clean coal” today would have been right home in the 19-aughts. In her earliest memories we see, for example, a coal-powered railroad advertising the cleanliness of their service. In portraying Lillian’s life, Rooney shows us markers for the times. ![]() Margaret Fishback - from the Poetry Foundation She presented a somewhat cynical view of romance, and had to eat a bit of crow when she succumbed to love and marriage in her 30s, taking it so far as to having a child. The poems that Kathleen Rooney uses in the book as Boxfish’s are Fishback’s. She penned several books of verse that earned her a reputation beyond her ad work. Like Margaret, Lillian hails from Washington DC, arriving in 1900, came to NYC in her 20s, and became one of the premier ad writers in the country. Lillian Boxfish, the character, is based on a real person, Margaret Fishback, whose career and life paths Lillian mimics. In stopping at various Manhattan spots over the course of the night, she encounters prompts to memory that span her lifetime, and a major chunk of the 20th century. On New Year’s Eve 1984, 84 year old Lillian Boxfish sets out from her Murray Hill apartment on a considerable walk. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I hoped Archie was smart enough to have destroyed the tape before Edythe could watch. I was trying to remember how to use my voice so that I could stop him if he tried to say anything about the rest of it. I was glad he didn’t seem to mention anything else about the tape-the focus was all on his past. Archie was searching right there on his laptop, trying to narrow down the options of where he’d been kept in his human life. At first I wasn’t sure what they were talking about, because only Edythe was speaking out loud, but eventually I caught up. When Royal was gone, Archie took his spot. I think it must have been while Royal or Eleanor was talking that Archie watched Joss’s video from the dance studio. Edythe had whispered Eleanor’s name he’d growled once and left. He told me about losing his family, and how none of this was worth what he’d lost. Royal was the least careful with his words. He told me about the revenge he’d gotten. How the beautiful daughter pretended to love him to please her father, and then how she had watched when her lover from a rival criminal syndicate had Royal beaten to death, how she’d laughed aloud the whole time. He told me about the only daughter of a powerful man-exactly what kind of power this man wielded, Royal hadn’t entirely understood-and how Royal had planned to marry her and become heir to the dynasty. He told me about a life consumed with vanity, with material things, with ambition. ![]() “and realized it was smarter to disappear. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It was interesting to see how closely Steve Prefontaine was tied to Nike.As a casual runner, it was motivating to see someone describe running with such love and reverence.I related strongly to Knight’s experience as a founder new to manufacturing and importing.I laughed out loud several times while reading it, which is rare for me while reading. It was comforting to see that my frustrations working with overseas suppliers are similar to what Knight experienced fifty years ago. ![]() There was a lot that I found relatable as a founder who never expected to be in the manufacturing business. Nike’s history is more interesting than I expected, and the book provides a lively story of the company’s early years. ![]() They positioned themselves as the sneaker company that served runners when everyone else was just making pretty shoes. Running wasn’t popular in the 70s, but Nike’s founders loved running. It would be like me getting a Google tattoo in 2003.Īfter reading Shoe Dog, my coach’s tattoo made sense. It was a Nike tattoo, and he proudly told us that he got it a few years after the company was founded. My high school cross-country coach was a fairly straight-laced guy, so it was a bit out of character that he had a small tattoo on his back. I didn’t find many business insights, but it was still an engaging and funny story. I bought this book hoping for lessons to apply to my business, manufacturing and selling physical products. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the same way, I'm sure there are some readers who won't like the outcome of The Good Lie, but it stems from a very protective policy I have when I write my books: nobody messes with my girls. I admire people who stand up for children. The 2021 Open Education Conference is made possible by generous support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Michelson 20MM Foundation. I know a lot of people in the community found her tactics too harsh and aggressive, but I really admire what she did. The lawyer in the book, Angela Peligro, is based on a lawyer I know who made a career of suing people and institutions who committed abuse against children. I get very angry at stories in the news about adults who have abused their positions of power and control-whether they are parents, teachers, clergymen, etc.-to commit horrible crimes against young people. ![]() I feel very, very strongly about the rights of children and teenagers to control their own bodies. The Good Lie is an example of authors writing about the things that make them mad. There is violence and sex, and though I'm not one who could talk about the authenticity of the culture, it certainly felt authentic. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I found myself both rooting for and angry with Winter as a character and with some of the choices she makes, yet understanding why she feels this is the "right" thing to do all at the same time. Brooklyn is her home, and she's a strong character with her own goals.Sister Souljah herself is a character in the book, introduced right away with Winter complaining that she can't stand Souljah, which I found a really intriguing choice. Winter is a tough young woman, and while she didn't grow up in poverty she's used to the violence and drugs on the street. ![]() But then her family moves out Long Island, her father is arrested, and things begin going downhill from there. This is my first introduction to urban or street fiction, and considered to be a classic of the genre. The familiar setting is, in large part, what immediately draws you into the story-as easy to enjoy as a sip of your favorite fresh-brewed coffee drink. It’s a classic D&D-inspired world filled with magic, humanoid races (hobgoblins, orcs, gnomes, etc.) and the standard fantasy tropes like “corrupt city guard” and “wicked criminals”. Legends and Lattes follows Viv, orc barbarian badass, who decides to hang up her sword and open a shop brewing gnomish coffee, a delicacy never-before-seen in the city of Thune. It’s a soothing, comforting, yet delightfully familiar journey into the unknown, where the biggest monsters are self-doubt and uncertainty, but the treasure is worth far more than just gold or gemstones. Legends and Lattes is, without a doubt, the book we all need right now. That feeling you get, that “all is right in the world”, this book is EXACTLY like that! Best of all, you’ve got a freshly made cup of coffee in your hands and a tasty treat (chocolate croissants, perhaps?) sitting beside you.
